Can Severed Lateral Collateral Ligament Cause Any Problems In Future?

During knee surgery to remove a bone fragment the doctor severed my lateral Collateral Ligament on my left leg, he said this was nessesary to remove the fragment. he originally to my wife after surgery that he relieved a potion of the lcl because it was rubbing a flat spot on the petella. not sure what to believe however, when i ask if he re-attached the lcl he said no you dont need it. what in normal, and what should i expect down the road? he know i am a body builder and lift weights 3 times a week i am 55 years old and in good shape
