Can Intake Of Topamax Cause Constant Cough With Whitish Phelgm Production?

Hi, I have had a constant harsh cough for 3+ months, I am not a smoker, nor is anyone in my household or work smoke. I occassionally have a slight productiveness with this cough with clear to whitish phlegm. I have never had seasonal allergies or a history of asthma. I have during this same time started taking Topamax 50mg at bedtime to help relieve serious chronic migraines & I m happy to say this has really helped. I am 62 yrs old and over weight but I would not consider myself morbidly obese, I have lost 15 lbs in the past 3 months as well, but this was intentional. My only other Heath issues are controlled HTN and GERD. I would like to stop coughing all the time, as an Oncolongy RN it can interfere with the care of my patients. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Persistent coughing is most commonly related to : (1) post nasal drip
(2) GERD (3) asthma
Some persons may have more than one problem.

Post nasal drip is the most common cause, some persons may not be aware of the drip.
The use of topical steroid nasal sprays (eg flonase, nasonex, nasocort, rhinocort) and oral antihistamines would be helpful if this the case.

If you have a history of reflux, a change in diet and reflux medication would help.

I hope this helps
