Hi,

The most probable causes I can think about your symptoms for coughing in the morning are one or a combination of the following:
- Sinusitis causing accumulation of discharge in the nose, throat and trachea throughout night and thus coughing in the morning once you get up.
- Bronchitis and lung related diseases cause the similar picture.

Hence I would advise you the following:
- X-ray of sinuses and lungs as preliminary and CT scan for confirmation.
Tests of blood.
- Pulmonary function tests.
- Consult your Pulmonologist and discuss these points, get investigated to get the correct cause so that a specific treatment can be done.
- Till then take steam inhalations at bed time and try to remove the phlegm before going to sleep.
- Nasal drops at bed time.
- Steam inhalation in the morning too.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
