Can I Have Ayurvedic Medicine For Seizure Along With Keppra?

Hello!!! Here is my question ; Im a 49 year old female diagnose with Epilepsy. The episodes happens when I am not taking my medicine every day, because I forget about it and when I am stressed and don t sleep well. My first seizure was in 2003, then another one 2007, then October 2013, February 2014, and June 2014. I am currently taking Keppra 750mg twice a day. My question is can I use aurvedic medicine combined with the Keppra? like roots, leaves like vidanga, trikatu, etc, to help me boost my metabolism and to help me with everything?

Hello! Epilepsy is a very complex condition, and seizure can be life threatening, so you have to be very careful and systematic in taking your medication. Levetiracetam (Keppra) may have different side effects, which i will mention below. Ayurveda is a practice that uses different techniques to reach the goal of balance between mind, body and soul which is believed to be in the basis of a good health and wellbeing. It's known and used from over 2000 years. In my opinion you can use ayurveda along with the regular use of the anticonvulsant (keppra in your case). Your healer (ayurvedic specialist) should know very well the mechanism of action and side effects of the levetiracetam, so no interactions or undesired effests can take place.
Some of the most frequent side effects of levetiracetam are headache, drowsiess and somnolence, anorexia, weakness, decrease white blood cell count which leads to infection, nervousness, aggressive behaviour and hostility, dyskinesia.
I hope this has been helpful and everything goes fine.
