Can Hitting Of The Head On Solid Surface Cause Internal Damage?

Hi, my 20 month old niece fell down and hit her forehead on the pavement really badly. She immediately started crying and a huge bump appeared. that is a good sign i know and quite normal...but... she has been crying and moaning like i have never seen her before...with a few quiet breaks here and there... I suggested to go to Hospital... but the parents think it is just a matter of waiting for her 'tantrum' to go away... she is now quiet watching TV and eating a bit... so I guess she will be ok? you think we should check if there any internal damage?

hi There,
I am Dr. Deepak, I work in Emergency Department. I have been seeing lot of children with minor head injury.
It's good to see that you are worrying so much about you young niece. She is lucky to have you. I understand that she had a fall and hit her head really badly which caused a huge bump and she started crying.
I feel she will be okay, As you mentioned she is now quiet and watching TV. mostly it was the pain that made her cry.
I would advice you to take care of her by keeping a watch on few things like
1. she has vomiting 2-3 times
2. Black/Bluish coloration around the eyes or behind the ear.
3. She is continues to cry.
4. she is becoming too much drowsy, not able to stay awake.
5. If the bump that she has is more than 5 cm
6. if she has a seizure episode, considering she is not a case of epilepsy
If any of it there, Then I would advice you to take her to a Child specialist or to Emergency department
For the time being my advice is to give her some pain killer if you have at your home, simple Paracetamol syrup should do the job, and to apply some ice pack at the bump.
Thank you
Hope your niece stays healthy.
