Can Hip Pinning Surgery Has Any Effect On Child Birth?

Hi, i'm a 20 year old female and about a year ago I had hip pinning surgery due to my broken femoral neck. I had 3 pins placed in my left hip. Me and my significant other are discussing having children later on and I was curious as to know will this have any affect on giving child birth? What affects will it have while I'm carrying the child? Am I still capable of giving birth to a healthy baby?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The fact that you had had hip surgery itself has no impact on the health of your baby or your pregnancy. See you completely can have a normal low risk pregnancy. However, the only issue will be the ability to open your legs adequately and push for delivery. If you have normal range of motion especially in hip flexion, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to bend and open your legs adequately to have a completely normal healthy vaginal birth.

So in summary, the only reason that you would not be able to have a normal vaginally delivery is if you could not flex your hips enough to have your legs open in order to push out a baby. If at this time you have normal range of motion and normal function of your leg your orthopedic surgery will have no impact on your subsequent labor and delivery.

I hope I was able to answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
