Can Xanax Be Taken After Having Beer?

I took 1/2 of a .25 mg this morning at around 8:00 am. Today is my birthday and I d like to have a beer with my dinner. We plan to eat dinner around 6:00 pm. I am aware that you should not mix alcohol and Xanax, but am curious that since I only took 1/2 of a .25 mg Xanax, would it be remotely ok to drink 1-2 beers? Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Xanax is composed of 'alprazolam'. It is indicated for the management of anxiety disorder. Xanax slows down the activity of the central nervous system and produce a calming effect. Similarly, alcohol is a central nervous system depressant.

Alcohol and Xanax both increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. When depressants are mixed together, over-sedation occurs, which is a serious problem that may result in death.

Due to the synergistic properties of both, it results in the decreased flow of blood to the brain and increases in inhibitory neurotransmitters, individuals will often begin to experience significant issues with critical thinking, problem-solving, reasoning, self-control, planning, and judgement. Hence, it is advisable not to combine them.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
