Can Simvastatin Cause Weight Gain?

I ve never had any cholesterol problems (typ 160), but I once had a stroke (2012). Thankfully it wasn t real serious, but they prescribed simvastatin and said take it at night. My doctor said it would keep my arteries clean. But I never saw a lot of conviction in anyone. I question whether any gains outweigh potential and possible bad side effects. Have you any comments?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Given your history of stroke it is quite obvious that you must have underlying blood vessel pathology as well such as atherosclerosis. Simvastatin is an absolutely beneficial drug in preventing the accumulation of cholesterol any further. Please do note that any drug including simvastatin taken for blood cholesterol can only prevent further accumulation but it cannot regress or dissolve the clots which have already formed.
Removal of atherosclerosis is only possible by surgery. I would advise you to continue with simvastatin for its proven benefits. It is contraindicated only if you are pregnant.
