Can Microgynon Along With Levothyroxine Cause Weight Gain And Fatigue?

I am on 75mg of Levothyroxine and was on the mini pill Dianette also (not as a contraceptive but to regulate periods as I have PCOS). My doctor changed my pill to Microgynon however I feel since the change of pill the Levothyroxine is not working as well as it had been. I have put on weight and am always tired despite there being no change in my diet or lifestyle - do you think the Microgynon could be the cause and do you have any recommendations?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thyroxine and combined oral pills do not have any major drug interaction. Hormonal pills do not reduce the action of Microgynon. Combined pills can cause weight gain as a side effect which could be the cause of your recent increase in weight. You can discuss the option of getting back to mini pill which contains only progesterone. Weight gain and appetite stimulating side effects are less compared to combined pills.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
