Can Lisinopril Be Taken With High Potassium Food Products?

I have recently read that the Lisinopril Ace-Inhibitor I ve been on for about 10 years doesn t play well with potassium or foods that it comes in, which are many foods I eat. These are some daily eaten high-potassium foods I found I should avoid: bananas, bran products (does this include Whole Grain Oatmeal?), baked beans, broccoli, nuts and seeds, peanut butter, cabbage, carrots and citrus fruits. Are there any Ace HBP meds that are not averse to these foods?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is not advisable to take potassium rich foods while taking Lisinopril.

ACE inhibitors like Lisinopril) are commonly prescribed in the treatment of high Blood pressure (BP) and congestive heart failure. They can cause your body to retain excess potassium, which can lead to hyperkalemia.

If taken along with potassium rich foods as mentioned in your query, ACE inhibitors can significantly increase the risk of development of hyperkalemia.

So, in view of the above you are advised to avoid eating foods rich in potassium while you are on Lisinopril or other ACE inhibitors.

While whole grain oatmeal contains small amounts of potassium as compared to other listed foods hence can be consumed. There is no ACE inhibitor which is not known to cause hyperkalemia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
