Can Levonelle Cause Dark Bleeding After Intercourse?

Hi... I took Levonelle a week ago, which was 24hrs after unprotected sex with my husband... I am 32 and had an ectopic pregnancy 2 years ago and my right tube was removed... It has been 7 days since i took the Levonelle, and i am concerned that yesterday i started bleeding quite dark old blood and now clots also, as this is how my ectopic started last time... I should have been right in the middle of my cycle a few days ago, as the unprotected sex was 1 day after the end of my period... is there a high chance that the levonelle may not have been efficient? should i consider this as a period? How long before i should do a test? Last time my HCG levels were so low that the hospital kept me under observation for 3 days hoping it would work itself out - until my tube ruptured, and if i have to go through this again i would rather not lose my tube this time...

Hi,

Levonelle contains levonorgestrel and has to be taken 72 hours of unprotected sex. Levonelle is effective if taken before the release of an egg from the ovary which is known as ovulation. The sooner you take Levonelle, the more effective it will be. In comparison, it is estimated that 0.6% to 2.6% of women who take Levonelle after unprotected sex will become pregnant. The effectiveness of Levonelle may be reduced if a woman has a high body index. This makes it harder to provide a more precise estimate for the pill.

Taking the emergency contraceptive pills Levonelle can give you a headache or stomach pain and make you feel or be sick. The emergency contraceptive pill like Levonelle can make your next period earlier, later, painful or heavy and prolonged bleeding than usual. It can also cause spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods. If you want to do a pregnancy test, then do pregnancy test 7days after the next missed period.

Take care. Hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.
