Can I Take Minocycline For Acne Instead Of Tetracycline?

Hi- I am a 38 year old female with no known health issues. I was given minocycline for acne even though I told the doctor I was allergic to tetracycline. About a week later my taste changed and I noticed my tastebuds were swollen. My dentist stated my oral health was perfect. I was instructed to stop the medicine. I then noticed my tongue was whitish yellow. My throat apparently also had indications of post nasal drip. My ear also hurts as well as the tissue along the right side of my neck. Ear was examined and was normal. The doctor also ran blood work and a urinalysis- all normal. A couple days ago I noticed a small lump at the top right side of the area of the neck that moves up and down when you swallow. It is only on the right side. It is firm but can be moved. My GP told me to consult with an ENT and wasn't sure what was wrong. Is there a good probability it is cancer? I have quit drinking but there was a time period where I used it as a coping mechanism (approx. 10 years). I am waiting to see the ENT but reading up on the symptoms on the internet has scared me so I am hoping you can help me have a more realistic answer. Thanks in advance.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have acne on face which occur when there is clogged pores of sebaceous gland filled with sebum ,dead skin and bacteria get infected. Your doctor prescribed you Minocycline which is causing you oral problems and throat infection which is a common side effect. Oral symptoms are not of cancer. I would suggest you to avoid oily and fried food and make use of product containing benzoyl peroxide. Take Multivitamin supplements. Apply Adapelene gel once at night. Also wash your face with mild soap and cold water twice a day , exfoliate your face once a week , apply aloe vera gel and apply azelaic acid containing cream twice a day. Drink plenty of water daily and add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. If condition doesn't start getting better in a month then consult dermatologist. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course and can also go for chemical peel containing Glycolic acid.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
