Blood Test Shows Calcium Level 4.5 To 5.4. Have Crohn's Disease. Prescribed 50000 Units Of Vitamin D3 Twice A Month. Normal Range Of Ionized Calcium Levels?

What is the normal range of ionized calcium levels? My gastroenterologist has done this blood test every six months for three years. My levels range from 4.5 to 5.4. I have had Crohn's disease for six years. My family doctor wants me to take 50,000 units of vitamin d3 twice a month, but the info I received with the pills says not to take it if you are hypercalcemic. What should I do?

thank you for your query. the normal levels of ionized calcium in blood is 4.5 - 5.6 mg/dL (1.1-1.4 mmol/L), and serum Calcium is 8.5 - 10.5 mg/dL (2.12 - 2.57 mmol/L ). If your ionized calcium levels are in 4.5- 5.4 md/dL, they are in the normal range.
If your family doctor is prescribing you vit D3, you can take them safely, as you are not hypercalcemic (means calcium levels more than normal range). Moreover, due to crohn's disease, you are likely to be prescribed drugs (including steroids) which decrease blood calcium levels. probably that's why you are being prescribed vit. D3 along with it.
Hope I've been able to satisfy your query. Please feel free to contact me for any further clarifications if needed. best of luck.
