Back Pain When Standing Up. X-ray Shows Muscle Spasm

I am suffering from severe pain in the right side of my back like someone is stabbing me, its roughly near the bottom of the rib cage. Sudden movements make it worse and I'm having to hold myself stiff to stop the pain. If I sit down and then want to stand, that seems the worse time for the pain. Ive had it on and off for a few months. I went to casualty when it first started and they exrayed and put it down to a muscle spasm, but the pain has been there consistently now for some time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Your symptoms suggest
1. Muscle spasm. You can take aceclofenac with chlorzoxazone (muscle relaxant) and rest. These will help you.

2. Renal calculi. Get done urine routine and USG abdomen once to diagnose. If stones are present based on the size we can opt treatment like flush therapy or intervention. Now need to drink plenty of water and you can take anti spasmodic like busulpan and Ibuprofen 400 mg SOS which will help you..

Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Pain resulting due to a movement typically suggests a muscle spasm.

* Avoid any activity that causes the pain
* Gently stretch and massage the affected area
* Use moist heat fomentation over the painful region to relax the muscles
* Most of the persons who experience muscle spasms have Calcium, Vitamin D or Potassium deficiencies. So daily supplements of these are recommended.
* Muscle relaxant medications & local gels will be of help

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
