Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my doctor sent me a letter saying my '' recent blood test indicates that I need to make routine appointment with one of the nurses for vitamin D injections''.
she also encloses a prescription for tablets.
the problem is I don't think I need the injection, I heard that 90% of vitamin D can be taken from the sun. and my bones never hurts me
Hello, I appreciate your concern and can understand your problem. Be assured that i will try my best to guide you in right path.
Coming back to your question, i would like to tell you that injections are only necessary when either the person is not able to take anything by mouth or severe deficiency which cannot be corrected by oral tablets and causing severe problems.
So in your case, if i were your treating doctor and if i found out that you are vitamin D deficient, then i would have prescribed you vitamin D and calcium tablets for few days only. I would have also encouraged you to have sun bath early in morning before 10 am at least 5 days a week. Also suggest you to take milk and milk products and healthy diet containing calcium.
So i would advise you to take a second opinion with some other physician before starting injections.
Hope this answers your question and let me know directly if you are having any further relevant queries, i will be obliged to guide you.
