Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Do they give you a pill to help you relax in you room before they wheel you down for surgery? I was terrified when I was outside the OR waiting for surgery and they were trying to shove tubes up my nose and down my throat. Worst experience I ever had and still have nightmares.
Brief Answer: There can be used some drugs which may relax the patient before the surgery.
Detailed Answer: Hello, Thank you for using HCM. I am sorry for what you have experienced. Yes, there are a number of different drugs which can be used as tranquilizers before surgery, such as benzodiazepines (midazolam, diazepam, oxazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam). They are commonly used for treating anxiety, causing sedation and induction of sleep. They may be given endovenously (or IM) 1-2 hours before anesthesia induction. There can not be given orally as pills, because of the risk of aspiration (passage of stomach liquids to the lungs) during the surgery or because the effect may not be realized before induction and significant and prolonged drug presence may complicate emergence following short surgical procedures .
Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need more clarifications. Otherwise please close and rate the answer. Kind Regards, Dr. Juarda
