Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking spironolactone for high blood pressure and swelling of ankles. Now I am having leg cramps and spasms and also started getting cramping in my abdomen area (upper rib cage, right side around to my back). Should I be worried about this cramping, is this normal for this drug?
Hi & Welcome. Thanks for posting your query on health care magic. I can understand your concern. Cramps seem to be due to the drug Spironolactone which causes hyperkalemia (increase potassium level in the blood) as one of its side effects. I would advise you to consult your treating doctor for an alternate but safer medication like Thiazide with or without Loop diuretic (like Furosemide) to treat both the hypertension and swollen ankles. These 'water pills' do not cause hyperkalemia and hence are safe and effectiv.e Hope this answers your query. A feed back is appreciated.
