Are Ferilaid Tablets Safe To Use While Planning For Pregnancy?

Hi, my husband and I would like to try another baby. I had PCOS and my husband has low sperm count and problem with motility. I have read about this supplement FertilAid and how it helped lots of other couples with the same issue as ours. We would like try it first before consulting with an infertility specialist (like we did before) because of monetary reasons. Is it safe to use? I don t take any prescription meds while my husband takes simvastatin 10mg. Please, I need your advice. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Fertilaid supplements for both women and men are certainly safe to take when planning pregnancy. They are both mostly vitamin and mineral supplements with some additional herbal ingredients that are also found in commonly prescribed dietary supplements of other types. There are no ingredients in Fertilaid that would have any hormonal effects so I really do not believe that this dietary supplement could in any way affect a woman's ability to conceive.

Furthermore, dietary supplements are not required to prove that they are effective by law. Any supplement can say or advertise that it designed to treat a medical condition, but there is always a disclaimer on the package that says "this product is not designed to diagnose or treat any disease".

Both you and your husband have real medical conditions that usually require some level of hormonal treatment or additional procedures (like intrauterine insemination) to be effective. It is doubtful that it over-the-counter dietary supplement of any kind could help increase your chance of pregnancy without medical intervention.Fertilaid is also not inexpensive - it is about US$25-US$30 per bottle.

If you and your husband have already tried to get pregnant on your own for a year, and given that there is no medical evidence to support its use, I would recommend that you save your money and consult with a fertility specialist when you are ready to commit to trying to conceive again. It is recommended that all women take a supplement containing folic acid when trying to conceive because folic acid helps prevent certain types of birth defects. Any daily multivitamin or prenatal formula vitamin contains folic acid, or can be purchased separately as a vitamin supplement.

I hope I was able to adequately answer question today, and that this information was helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best wishes for a successful pregnancy,
Dr. Brown
