Are 10 stents in blocked arteries harmful to health?

I have had two bypass surgeries-4 yrs & 2 days apart-both were 2 grafts. The grafts have all died and I have had about 10 stents puts in,over the past 7 yrs. Four of them last year. In June 0f 2010,had two stents put in ,then in October I had to have another placed next to the June one-it was 90% blocked. I had a heart attack while in surgery for the June one .I am on Plavix, Isosorbide,Aspirin Bystolix ,Ranexa to name a few of my drugs. It seems as though I can only go a few months (hospitalized 5 times last year) and the blockages occur. My cholestrol & blood pressure are under control. Have really bad family genetics. How many stents are too many??

From your history it is clear that you have bad genetics responsible for such rapid progression of blocks, i have few patients who underwent Bypass surgery twice and have multiple stents. As far as number of stents is concerned, no figure is considered too many.I have knowledge of more than 20 stents in one patient.so you need not worry about number of stents. But you must be careful for your life style and high dose of statin may be given( even if cholesterol is normal). For this you should discuss with your treating doctor.

I am 65 years old. I am very active as I play badminton 3 times a week for more then 30 years. Sometime in 2009 I had angioplasty done. Three of my arteries were blocked and the heart surgeon were successful in implanting 3 medicated heart stens. I had been taking medication since then to lower my blood cholesterol and blood thinning medicine. Since then I have been as active both in my work schedule and exercise. My question is how long will the medicated stens last? And do I get the same symptoms of impending heart attack like numbness of the left arm, sweating and fatigue, if the stens are not functioning?

My son is 35. He had chest pain and had angioplasty then had stent. Dr said he has plaque and calcification throughout, 2 arteries 40% blocked, a stent placed in one that was 90% blocked, angioplasty ( had a month previouly) totally blocked and making collateral circulation. States, he is too young for a bypass and that a bypass will only last 10 years. He has no previous medical problems. His father had a 5 way bypass at the age of 40. Should we get a second opinion? The cardiologist also said he had permanent damage to the tip of his heart. Very concerned mother.
