Appendix Ruptured, Laproscopy Surgery Done. Having Fever, Vomitings, Diarrhea. Hospital Visit Required?

My six year old grandsons appendix ruptured on September 10, he had laproscopy surgery that evening and was sent home on Sept. 12. On Sept 14 he was readmitted to the hospital with a fever, vomitting and very liquid diahrea. He was release on Sept 19 after his fever stayed down and he started having normal bowel movements. Once again, today, he has vomitted three times. No fever and No diarhea. Before his surgery he weighed 40.8 lbs. He is very small and has now lost almost three pounds because he won't eat. Is another visit to the hospital necessary? He sees his surgeon this coming Tuesday.

Dear friend,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I can fully appreciate your concern for your grandson's problem.

Rupture of appendix may be associated with release of intestinal contents into the peritoneal cavity and cause a condition called Peritonitis. it manifests itself with fever, stiff abdominal wall, vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea. This condition requires a 7-10 days of injectable antibiotics.

Please discuss the possibility of Peritonitis with your surgeon and request him to investigate for the same. Recurrent fever, vomiting and diarrhea indicates incompletely treated peritonitis.

I am highly optimistic that you will certainly benefit from the advice.

May I assure you that I am always available for your assistance and will try my best to cure your condition to the best of my experience and knowledge.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
