ACL Tear On Left Knee, Using Custom Fit Brace. Tremendous Pain After Playing. Did I Tear A Ligament? Treatment?

my son has an ACL tear on his left knee that has not been repaired because he is still growing. He uses a custom fit brace that allows him to run track and play lacrosse. This weekend, the lacrosse fields were really muddy and his foot gave way in the mud. He felt tremendous pain and now cannot fully extend the left knee nor bear any weight. We have to wait 2 days before we can see his orthopedic surgeon. Did he tear his other ligament? Other then rest and motrin, should I do anything else for my son?

Hello,

Your son's knee is weak due to ACL tear(Don't Know whether Partial or complete tear).

So there is also a chance that he may have torn his PCL or the meniscus.

A complete knee examination and MRI will reveal the real damage.

In between this interval of consultation he needs complete rest and analgesics.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I personally feel that an ACL tear needs reconstruction (not repair) in a young individual, the only exception being a partial ACL tear in which case conservative management is offered.

From the description, I suspect that your son might have injured either Cruciate ligaments or Meniscal injury.

An MRI scan is mandatory to ruleout either conditions.

Temporary management is as follows -
* REST TO LOCAL PART - activity modification by avoiding additional strain of the injured joint.
* ICE PACKING - to alleviate the acute pain
* ELASTIC COMPRESSION BANDAGE - to reduce the swelling
* Judicious use of analgesics

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
