6 Year Old Child, Itchiness In Vagina. Cleaned Area With Polisporin, Applied Vaseline. How To Control Itching?
Hi, my six year old daughter came home from school today and was itching her vagina . She mentioned she had soiled her underwear at school and I figured it was because she hadnt cleaned properly. We washed her area and put vaseline and then later polisporin on the red areas but now it is near 3 in the morning and she is scratching so much she can t sleep. Is there anything I can do until I can get to see a doctor tomorrow afternoon?
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for writing in.
I think your daughter has a pinworm infection. This is making your daughter scratch. For the itching, you can give her Benadryl syrup 1.5 tsp right now. This will make her drowsy. The following things need to be done:
a. She needs a single dose of mebendazole after consulting her physician
b. Tell her to stop scratching as this will cause re-infection which will make the problem worse
c. Cut her nails short and tell her to wash her hands scrupulously every time she uses the bathroom
d. Her bed linen needs to be washed in hot, boiling water.
e. Use disinfectant to wash the seat she is using.
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Intense itching in the area is usually suggestive of dermatitis or a local infection. Doing a cold compress in the area may provide her a temporary relief till you consult the physician. You can also apply 1% hydrocortisone ointment locally.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
