Will Subserous Fibroids Affect Pregnancy Or The Fetus?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Oct 2017
Question: Hi, my wife conceived the pregnancy through IVF. She is 34 years old and this is our first successful pregnancy after two early miscarriage and one ectopic. This IVF was done with her own eggs and my sperm, both fresh not frozen. Before IVF treatment the doctor has said my wife has two fibroids which are not of concerns at the moment.

She is now in her 23rd week of pregnancy. The anomaly scan at 21 weeks revealed all was fine within the range and baby was developing fine.

Her fibroids readings at 21 weeks in anomaly scan were:

Fibroid 1: size 35mm x 24mm x 30mm, volume 13.2ml, Type: Subserous, Position: right lateral wall, Well clear of internal os.

Fibroid 2: size 23mm x 19 mm x 19mm, volume: 4.3ml, Type: Subserous, Position: posterior, Well clear of internal os.

My wife also takes Levothyroxine due to hypothyroidism and her latest TSH readings were 2.1.

We are concerned and want to find out:

1> Are the above Fibroids are serious? Can we do something about it?

2> What should be the next monitoring steps in regards to above Fibroids?

3> In anomaly scan baby's BPD (biperital diameter) and HC were in the normal range and other organs were visible and appeared to be normal. Her next scan is at 30 weeks. Do we need to do any other scan in next 2-3 weeks time?

4> Doing more ultrasound scan harm baby?

5> My wife had nausea and vomiting between 12 weeks to 18 weeks. She was fine between 18 to 21 weeks. Now in 23rd week her nausea and vomiting came back. Is this normal? Her UTI has been treated one week ago with Amoxicilin.

6> She is able to feel very light baby movements couple of times a day only. Is she supposed to feel more baby movements at this stage? I am not able to feel baby movements on her belly at the moment.

Sorry for too many questions but we are little concerned due to previous history.

Awaiting your details reply.

Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
1. Since these are subserous fibroids, which are unlikely to be affected by pregnancy, and small in size, therefore there is nothing to worry.Nothing needs to be done as these are unlikely to affect the pregnancy or adversely affect the fetus.
2. Nothing needs to be done to monitor the fibroids.
3.The next scan should be between 28-30 scan and is basically done to assess the fetal growth.
4.No, obstetric ultrasounds do not affect the fetus any ways .
5. Nausea and vomiting can occur till 3rd trimester.
If Liver and renal disorders are ruled out, then she can take Doxinate thrice a day to get relief.
6. There are only slight movements at this stage. Movements will become more regular and prominent as the pregnancy advances.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
