Brief Answer:
Ongoing infection in the body. Chills are the body's way of producing a large amount of heat inside the body to degenerate protein (all bacterias, fungus and virus have protein in them).

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

99% of times chills are suggestive of ongoing bacterial or viral or protozoal infection in the body. Chills are caused by rapid muscle contraction and relaxation. They are the body's way of producing a large amount of heat inside the body to degenerate protein (all bacterias fungus virus have protein in them). A double hernia history two weeks ago is again suggestive of ongoing infection in the body.

I would recommend you to go for following tests to rule out infection-
- Complete blood count with total and differential blood count
- Urine routine and microscopy
- Blood routine and microscopy with culture and sensitivity test
- A smear of gastric juices. The easy way is to vomit (induce by fingers) and take 10 ml of vomitus for routine and sensitivity test.

Hope I have answered your query.
