When I Leave The House And Go On Public Transportation

default
Posted on Sun, 2 Dec 2018
Question: When I leave the house and go on public transportation such as train or bus I start to worry that I%E2%80%99m going to vomit or get sick from someone else or think I have some illness. And I%E2%80%99d start to feel a little nauseous (like loss of appetite) not major nausea, and my heart will start to beat a bit fast and I%E2%80%99ll just feel a hot feeling but then it goes away after a few minutes if I smoke or start walking around doing something or I%E2%80%99ll have a sip of water, listen to music or keep myself busy. Also, I googled symptoms and some of the conditions google lists are serious conditions. I start to get scared and don%E2%80%99t want to go places because I think I%E2%80%99m going to vomit, and I don%E2%80%99t eat out in public because of the same reason above. And I%E2%80%99m afraid of getting full because maybe I%E2%80%99d throw up or something and then start feeling the same way, so I%E2%80%99ll smoke a cigarette and I%E2%80%99ll calm down. I haven%E2%80%99t been eating much (I%E2%80%99ve went 1-2 days without eating out of fear) and I just drink water and eat little because I don%E2%80%99t want to feel sick. I also check the food like 100%25 to make sure it%E2%80%99s cooked and who ever cooked it washed their hands, if the food is old, or has an odd taste or someone else gets sick from it then I start to think I am. There were days I thought I was sick and just stayed in bed all day. also when I%E2%80%99m out in public eating or just in a place outside my home then I%E2%80%99m like feeling my forehead, neck and back constantly checking myself if I have a temperature. This has been going on for about 7-8 months. What%E2%80%99s causing my symptoms? Do you think It%E2%80%99s some type of underlying illness?? I google a lot and sometimes makes things worse.

I%E2%80%99ve been told its anxiety. But sometimes it just comes about by itself. If im full I start to think im nauseous or if i eat too much or too fast, and then goes away after i get up and do something or smoke and relax. Is there something wrong? I worry so much about this and im not sure if its real or if its anxiety. is there any condition that would make me feel like this other than anxiety? I get this empty like feeling and just feel like eh. I always time myself after i eat, i set the timer for 3 hours to reassure myself i wont be sick. most of the time well all the time im ok but if I eat something that i know or think wasnt prepared properly i%E2%80%99ll start to feel a little sick feeling or i%E2%80%99ll make myself think that i guess and then i wouldnt eat, either for a day or two.

Brief Answer:
This is very unlikely to be any serious conditions and appear anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hi andWelcome to Ask A Doctor service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Your concern is very right , and I can understand your worries , any one with such symtpoms would have been worried .Howe'ver i have gone through your questions in good details , and I am very confident to say that these symtpoms are not suggestive of any serious medical codition .Infact the idea that your have got anxiety towards your health and food is very right .
Yes many serious conditions simulate this and should not be ignored, but they don't present this way , rather would have caused you be sick anytime, and more symtpoms like weight loss , fever , rashes , or difficulty in swallowing .Similarly serious medical conditions of the stomch do not present with special timings are after thinking about foods. So I understand , you should not be worried alot.
As you said , the probelm is linked to your ideas and thinking about foods , and your heart starts racing and you get frightened in certain areas , these are all typical for anxiety dosorder and phobias.
Still the best solution will be to see your doctor , get fully examined , and do some basic lab tests( if already not done ) ..if they are all normal ( most probably they will be )this would be almost satisfaction to say that there is no serious medical conditions.
Yes I understand anxiety itself is quite distressing many times and good care shoud be taken of it.You should see a psychiatrist for proper assessment and management of that.
Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. Please don't hesitate to ask anything else you need to know. kind Regards Dr Rahman.

I have lost weight though. But I’m assuming it doesn’t count because I did it intentionally by not eating enough or eating nothing for days at a time sometimes and drink just 2 liters of water a day or so

So you think it’s just the anxiety? Also I’ve noticed when I start getting anxious after a while I need to use the bathroom and the bowel movement is solid but a little bit mushy. Is that normal ? Any other time it’s normal

Also my anxiety has been for about 6-7 months. I was taking medicine for a month and a half which was helping but then I stopped. And I was suppose to go to cognitive behavioral therapy but I was afraid of going on the train because I thought I’d get sick

Hi ...its good that you ask more questions so that we know about the disease.
Yes it looks very more like anxiety dosorder.
treatment may be with drugs and some times need cognitive behavioural therapy .That's all to be decided by your pschiatrist.
If he advises CBT , and you can't go by train you should discuss this with your dr who would make arrangements for this.He may prescribe you drugs initially or another possible arrangement but it's important to comply with the treatment as anxiety can effect the daily life very badly .
Please dont hesitate to ask questions .

Yes, I’ll get in contact with my psychiatrist. I’ve always had this type of anxiety but it got worse about 6-7 months ago. After meeting a few people that were sick or I thought they were sick.

HI .
Yes anxiety is many times for long times with on off worsening .Many times ot need long time treatment .
This is another reason for reassurance that there is no serious disease as serious diseases man times don't linger for extended times .
You should just relax and comply with your pschiatrist advice. I am hopeful things would get better.
Kind Regards

Detailed Answer:
They produce alarm symptoms like low blood level, difficulty in swallowing, or severe shortness of breath, or unable to walk or stand, or weight loss without reasons,
The patient gets progressively weak and is very sick if any serious disease is not treated for long times.
Many blood tests can become abnormal like kidneys or liver test.
The doctor can clearly see the patient becomes weaker.

I would do it but I’m still afraid of finding out results. Like if I have a medical condition or something god forbid.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Many people do get fears of tests for results .Howe'ver you should resist this phobia which might be a part of your anxiety disorder. You shoud do the tests , I am quite confident that very likely they will be normal and hence would give you quite reassurance.
Even if any thing is abnormal ( looks very unlikely ) we would be able to catch them and hence manage them accordingly.
