What Medication Is Suitable To Treat Enterobacter Aerogenes Leading To UTI Symptoms?
Question: Hi,
My wife had an urine infection for last 4 days. We had started taking lots of water and two urine test (R/E & Culture). Intensity got reduced for the burning sensation, but it hasn't gone completely. Today I got the culture report and it says, she is infected with Enterobacter Aerogenes, with Colony count 500,000 cfu/ml. Bacteria is resistant to Amoxyclave and others are sensitive. I have searched the net, and could see this is a hospital acquired bacteria and should be treated cautiously. Infection specialist in the nearby hospital is on holiday today. Can you please advise what are the antibiotic treatments used against this kind of bacteria? She doesn't have any fever.

Since your wife has symptoms I suggest treatment. The antibiotic regimen should be aimed at the drugs that the bacteria are not resistant to. And that will be apparent from the urine culture that you refer to. I would choose cefuroxime.

An article says, this is a very sensitive bacteria and should not be treated with anything less than fourth generation cepholosporins. That can also be dangerous in creating resistance, which is why they suggest using Fluroquinolone or beta lactase. Can you please advise if these things are correct? Thanks

Just to be on safe side, do you think Cipro is ok? And does the colony count like 500,000 seems large? Sorry for the painful questions :)
