Question: i have been diagnosed with mesenteric panniculitis and am feeling much better after two days of intravenous cortisone in the hospital and on my third day of 40 mg prednisone at home,. is there a particular diet that i should follow for this? it seems to me that probably fat is something i should not have a lot of but i am curious if it really has anything to do with this. should i avoid even having one drink...that;s all i would have anyway....when i am out to dinner? or while i am on prednisone?

Brief Answer:
Mesenteric Panniculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello.Delighted to be able to help.
Mesenteric Panniculitis is a disease of unknown cause, but several factors have been implicated as triggers.
It is recommended to avoid (during and after treatment with prednisone):
1.-Smoke.
2.-Alcohol.
3-Fatty foods-Obesity.It has been observed that in children (with less fatty tissue) the disease incidence is much lower.
The mesenteric panniculitis is a chronic disease and unfortunately, even if you avoid smoke, alcohol and fatty foods-obesity, you can have exacerbations
of the disease, but following these recommendations is less likely.

i worry that the predisone will affect my acid reflux badly....i have a very large sliding hiatus hernia and i need to know if i can eat salad and uncooked veggies. will vinegar affect me badly? i am finding that my face is suddenly turning rounder and eyes smaller. will that go away? can i do moderate exercise on the new step? what about weights? how long will i be on prednisone? would one drink bring this on? i am going to a celebratory dinner on tuesday and would have loved a little champagne. if you say no, fine. thank you for answering my questions, dr.

Brief Answer:
Mesenteric Panniculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Delighted to be able to help.

About your questions:
1.-To avoid damage of Prednisone to acid reflux, it is recommended taking a proton pump inhibitor (Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, Pantoprazole...).Consult your doctor for prescription.
2.-You can eat salad and eat uncooked veggies but with a little salt and a little vinegar.
3.-Rounder face is a common side effect of Prednisone. When the dose decreases, will improve your appearance.
4.-Practice moderate exercise is allowed and recommended.
5.-Time on Prednisone depends on your symptoms. Sometimes although the person has no symptoms, a low daily dose is prescribed for lifetime.
6.-You may drink a little champagne in your next dinner, no problem. The danger is the chronic consumption of alcohol.

I Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help. If you do not have any clarifications, please don’t forget to evaluate my answer.
