Question: I m 28 year old female. I have by birth dry skin. I wud like to know what creams and soaps are better for dry skin? I use nivea creme ( blue) on my face. my face is pimple prone ( pcod ). can I continue to use it? also I use nivea smooth milk body for dry skin on my hands and legs. are creams better than lotions? I use ordinary soaps like lux, pears, XXXXXXX for bath. are there soaps better suited for dry skin? the water available in the new flat that I moved into makes the skin extremely dry , rough and sometimes even patchy ( like finger tips and toes). I use cetaphil on such occasions though. pls suggest me wat is better for daily use in creams and soaps?

Brief Answer: Avoid ALL soaps; Use "Cleansers". Detailed Answer: Hi there XXXX I do recall answering one of your earlier queries a few days ago if indeed you are the same person. Dry skin can be of different types. But the basis for all is to promote water retention in the skin & prevent its loss. Going by that token, any "cleanser" as opposed to a soap would be the best for your skin; natural alternative being Besan flour powder. Dove is probably the best known cleanser in the market but a lot of my patients complain they do not 'feel' like they are clean after using Dove. So i do also recommend either Sebamed or Cetaphil cleansing lotion/bar for the face. If oily, Cetaphil has an O.S. bar (oily skin bar) that is useful. Leave it on your skin for 3-5 minutes minimum contact while washing. Stop use of any soap be it lux or XXXXXXX or pears. I think Cetaphil moisturising cream is a good bet or if not suiting you, try Venusia. The latter is an Indian brand from Dr. Reddy's & i find patients respond well to it. Good Luck & wish you a clear complexion always. Dr Praveen Rodrigues MD
