Brief Answer:
Entrapment of median nerve at wrist

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
In Carpal tunnel syndrome there is nerve (Median) compression at wrist. This leads to numbness and tingling sensation in thumb, index finger and difficulty in doing fine work. May be confirmed by nerve study (EMG/NCV).
The common cause for this are-
1.Hypothroidism,Rheumatoid arthritis,Diabetes,pregnancy.
2.Old wrist fracture
3.Making the same hand movements over and over, especially if the wrist is bent down (your hands lower than your wrists), or making the same wrist movements over and over.
Mild symptoms usually can be treated with home care. You can:
1. Stop activities that cause numbness and pain. Rest your wrist longer between activities.
2. Ice your wrist for 10 to 15 minutes 1 or 2 times an hour.
3. Try taking Ibuprofen to relieve pain and reduce swelling.
4. Wear a wrist splint at night. This takes pressure off the median nerve.
The sooner you start treatment, the better your chances of stopping symptoms and preventing long-term damage to the nerve.

The definitive treatment is small surgical procedure in which the tissue causing nerve compression is released. Meanwhile the patent may have tricyclic antidepressant like pregablin after having a word with your local doctor.

Take care and I shall be glad to answer any further query
