It is age related findings and found early in long standing hypertension,altered lipid profile,diabetes mellitus . Aortic atheroma is an independent risk factor for stroke.Significance of this finding lies in the possibility that the smaller arteries of your heart may also be hardening which is a risk factor for a heart disease. Atheroma can also cause weakening and hence bulging of the arterial wall. This is called aneurysm which is often seen in the aorta.
