Brief Answer: It is deposition of lipid in the wall of aorta. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX Thanks for writing to HCM Atheromatous aorta means fatty deposition (cholesterol and fatty acids) in the inner walls of aorta, which is the largest artery in the body carrying blood away from the heart. Besides lipid, atheroma also contains macrophage cells, calcium and a variable amount of fibrous connective tissue. It is age related findings and found early in long standing hypertension, altered lipid profile, diabetes mellitus . Aortic atheroma is an independent risk factor for stroke.Significance of this finding lies in the possibility that the smaller arteries of your heart may also be hardening which is a risk factor for a heart disease. Atheroma can also cause weakening and hence bulging of the arterial wall. This is called aneurysm which is often seen in the aorta. Aortic aneurysm treatment depend upon size of dilatation and site of aorta involved. At present you don't require any active treatment for atheromatous aorta. You should try to keep your Diabetes mellitus and Cholesterol level in controlled level. You also need close monitoring of hypertension. You should take limited salt in your diet.Avoid fried and junk food.Avoid alcohol & smoking if you take these things. You should also increase your physical activity in the form of walking and exercise. You can also do meditation and yoga.It will help you a lot. Don't take stress in life. Get well soon.
