Question: Hello
I am a male, 53 years of age, 69", 200lbs
Just received my test results. I am a Type 2 Diabetic (12 years). Taking 1000mg metformin 2x/day, 10mg linsonopril, 40mg Crestor. 80mcg aspirin, multivitamin, aspart and novolog insulin.

I have also noticed dark green stools and have a stomach ache once a day.

Had lab work down two weeks ago with the following results:
UROBILINOGEN     2.0 High     E.U./DL     .2-1
ALANINE AMINOTRANSFERASE     118 High     IU/L     10-50
ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE     201 High     IU/L     38-126
ASPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE     72 High     IU/L     15-41
BILIRUBIN     2.2 High     MG/DL     0.1-1.5
GAMMA GLUTAMYL TRANSFERASE     241 High     IU/L     7-56

Could it be the dosage of medicine or what do these test rests say
Also had my gall bladder removed about 5 years ago

Thanks Mr XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Need evaluation...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Your blood results show that your liver functions are slightly altered, but not alarmingly high. There are many caues for this. Being a diabetic, the first thing to rule out is a condition called XXXXXXX ( non alcoholic steatohepatitis) which is due to fat accumulation in liver. Do you take alcohol? If so, i what quantity?

Other reason of altered liver function is Crestor. This cholesterol pill can cause alteration in liver functon, especially in a high dose like in your case.I would surely cut down the dose or stop it for few days and see the improvement.

Infact, one thing to note is that the liver function picture is more suggestive of a cholestasis ( stasis of bile) rather than hepatitis ( inflammation of liver). Eventhough your gall bladder was removed, this kind of liver function abnormality can occur when there is some inflammation or infection in biliary tree/tract.

Finally, viral infections and some herbs etc can cause this.

I recommend you to consult a GP or a hepatologist soon to arrange for an ultrasound scan at the earliest. In the interim, it may be a good idea to reduce your crestor to just half the dose. ( you may go back to the original dose once after the problem settle). The stomach ache and dark stools may be related to this.

Regards
Binu
