What Does This MRI Report Of Lower Back Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 4 Feb 2015
Question: I recently had an MRI for MS check up and it shows I incidentally also have a left-sided 8mm renal cyst.
Should I be concerned and what steps should I take if any?

Brief Answer:
A single 8 mm renal cyst at your age is not a concern

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Its understood that you got a MRI of lower back done and the report might have showed the presence of a 8 mm renal cyst (kidney cyst).

Above 60 years of age, one or two such cysts in the kidneys can be accepted as a part of normal. At your age an 8 mm cyst is a harmless one and not a concern. Cysts in the kidneys are thin walled bubble like structures containing fluids. If the cyst was more than 30 mm in size then it would have been important to do more tests, but at 8 mm there is no worry.

However, you can get an ultrasound scan abdomen done after 6 months to make sure that the cyst is not growing and is double confirmed to be a harmless one.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
