What Does My Lipid Panel Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Nov 2016
Question: Hi,
My lipid panel came back as follows:
Cholesterol 173 ref 100-200 (mg/dl)
Triglycerides 238H ref 35-160 (mg/dl)
Direct HDLC 31L ref 55-110 (mg/dl)
LDL 95 ref 0-129 (mg/dl)
VLDL 48H ref 8-32 (mg/dl)
Chol/DHDL 5.65H ref 0.00-4.49

my last test was:
Total Cholesterol     178 mg/dL     0 - 200 mg/dL
Triglycerides      90 mg/dL     ref 0 - 150 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol     31 mg/dL     ref 40 - 60 mg/dL
LDL Cholesterol     129 mg/dL ref 0 - 100 mg/dL
VLDL Cholesterol     18 mg/dL     ref 5 - 40 mg/dL
LDL/HDL Ratio     4.16

what do you make of the changes?
I went from a typical Western diet to vegan with no nuts or oils in between the 2 tests and I would have thought the most recent test would have been pristine. Am I right to be alarmed at the massive increase in Triglycerides and VLDL? What can be done for that?
Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that the increase in triglycerides is the main concerning factor in your blood lipid profile change.

Regarding VLDL, you should know that its increase is proportional to triglycerides increase.

It seems that your new diet is not so healthy. Cutting of nuts and oils is not the best thing to do. From the other hand fruits have a lot of fructose, which is fast absorbed and turned into triglycerides by your body.

I would recommend some tips to help reduce your triglycerides :

- avoid fruits rich in fructose
- avoid hypercaloric food like sweats, butter, fat food.
- increase food reach in omega 3 fatty acids (like fish, fish oil, olive oil, nuts, walnuts, cashew, etc.). Omega 3 fatty acids are the clue to reduce triglycerides. They are really healthy and you should try to take them more frequently.
- try to lose some pounds if you are overweight
- perform a lot of physical activity (walking, aerobics, etc.).

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
