Question: my father age 73 years has recently undergone colon surgery for colon cancer. Biopsy report has coma and it has been staged as t3n0mx stage
Microscopy report: Adenocarcinoma, poorly differentiated colon, large areas of ulceration noted
moderate lymphocytic response noted at advancing margin, tumour is infiltrating entire wall thickness, no lymphovascular invasion noted, illeal and colonic resected ends are free of tumour
reactive hyperplasia-regional lymph nodes (9 in number)

Surgeon is asking us to consult oncologist and start chemo sessions. But my father is allready weak, I am worried that he might not be able to bear chemo sessions
Kindly suggest that if we do not go for chemotherapy, what will be his survival rate

As discussed in details below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
I can understand the plight the whole family must be going through.

There are certain additional points that can help you to take the decisions:
- If the tumor marker CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) is done before the surgery and whether more than 5 or less. More than 5 means higher rate of recurrence.
- The status of M- metastases is not indicated and alters the outcome.
- The CT scan is suggestive of stage T4 and the histopathology says T3. The Ct scan shows
- Poorly differentiated- is a high risk of recurrence.

All these factors are indicative that an adjuvant chemotherapy may be beneficial.

And the most important of all is the opinion of Oncologist.
Get an opinion and then only can an opinion be formed and decision taken.
After all this only will be possible to talk about the survival rate, otherwise can not be predicted.

I hope this answers your query.
