What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015
Question: I recently had a blood test and my ana rate was 1:640. I will be going to a rhumatologist to have it checked. I did read where medications can skew the ana rate. I had just had my metoprolol increased prior to the test. Could that have skewed the ana rate?

Brief Answer:
positive ana

Detailed Answer:
Good evening

Thank you for writing on health care magic

Well the titre of ANA is quite high in your case. Yes Ana can be induced by drugs but metoprolol is not the commonly known drug for it. There are the other anti hypertensives like diuretics which can cause ANA positive.

Secondly as we grow older the chance of ANA becoming positive is high. But I would like to know why was it done in the first place. What were the symptoms you were experiencing for which this test was carried out

Do let me know. Will try to guide you further before you see your specialist. You can get ENA profile done till then to see which all antibodies are positive and If the drug induced antibody is positive or not

Await your reply.

I told the doctor that I was tired and he asked me if I had joint pain. I do in my knees. What are the types of disease they would be looking for when I go to the rhumatologist? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Connective tissue disease

Detailed Answer:
Good evening

1. Well, The feelings of fatigue can go in with a lot of symptoms. Are you experiencing any dryness of the eyes or the mouth as well??

2. The knee pain looks secondary to age( Osteoarthritis). IT may or may not be related to your ANA positive.

3. ANA can be positive in 7 to 10 % population. But yes, your titres are very high and we need to look into a further subset called ENA profile which checks almost 15-20 antibodies within ANA. The most common diseases which come with it are Systemic Lupus Erythrematous( SLE), Sjogrens syndrome and Scleroderma. I highly doubt you have scleroderma, but can be SLE or Sjogrens.

4. But dont panic, as the management totally depends on the organs it is involving. We normally prescribe patients with Hydroxychloroquine if they have no symptoms but very strong ANA to halt/slow the disease progression if it is bound to happen

I hope the information is useful
