Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: My father, 72 years of age, experienced some numbness of tounge on the left side along with some seizure like symptons (involuntary movement) on the left side of his mouth on 14-Jun. It occurred for 2-3 minutes only, then all was ok again. This has happened for the first time. General physician suggested MRI. Attached are the report images. Can you please review and suggest what is the issue and what is the cure? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Please Send MRI Report or Good Quality Images of the MRI Scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas, and I am here to help you. I have read your question with care and understand that your father, 72 years had
1. Numbness Left Side of Tongue
2. Involuntary Movements Left Side of Mouth for 3 minutes

Numbness of Tongue on One Side along with movements of Angle of Mouth on the same side denote that the problem is in the Left VII Nerve
Any how, we need the MRI report to proceed further

You have taken the MRI Film in a non uniform background. Hence I am not able to offer any opinion on the MRI since I am not able to decide whether the variation in the shade is because of the background or because of the problem in the brain

I would request you to Send High Quality Pictures of the MRI taken with a X Ray Lobby or At least against a Plain Background
or
The MRI Report

If you need any clarification / have doubts / have additional questions / have follow up questions, then please do not hesitate in asking again. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Best Wishes for Speedy Recovery
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care.

Q1
Can you please review and suggest what is the issue and what is the cure? Thanks.

The issue is most likely due to some edema (means collecting of fluid) around his left Facial Nerve (VII Cranial Nerve) at the level of Internal Auditory Meatus (means a part of skull bone)

Cure will be
1. Steroids and other Anti Inflammatory Drugs to reduce the edema and swelling
2. Drugs like Gabapentin to Modulate the Nerve Transmission
3. Vitamins
4. Supplements to improve nerve growth
5. Anti Oxidants
