high calcium can be caused by various disorders. The two most common ones are primary hyperparathyroidism and metastatic cancer. Calcium values higher than 15mg/dL are more likely to be caused by cancer. Lower values are more likely to be caused by benign disorders.
The first step of a basic investigation would include the following:
- PTH in serum
- Calcium and phosphorus in serum
- urea and creatinine in serum
- review of current regimen as certain drugs may cause increased calcium.
If the PTH is high when the serum calcium is also high, then primary hyperparathyroidism is the most likely cause by far.
