What Does High Blood Sugar Level After Surgery Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Mar 2017
Question: My sugar is at 342 right now I had surgery this morning and rode home for 5 hrs. They instructed me NOT to take diabetes meds last night or this morning so my sugar would be at a manageable level for surgery, it was in the 130s around 8am. I took my Metformin of 500mg a couple of hours ago. I also take 1.2mg Victoza normally in the morning, the 50mg Metformin and a Glyambi, 25-5mg but not this morning. Could you advise? Was going to bed but a little anxious now, never been this high, usually low 100s.

Brief Answer:
Don't worry, this is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I read carefully your query and understood your concern.

Your blood sugar result in thin moment is high because of post surgery stress and because you didn't take your normal anti diabetic treatement this morning.

Anyway don't worry, this situation is normal in your circumstances.

My advice is to check your ketone level in the urine(to be sure that you do not have acute complications of diabetes) and if the result is negative, you can take your Victoza injection of this morning, now.(This is enough for taday, tomorrow you will take all your diabetic meds normally,in the morning,as usual.)

If the ketones are positive in the urine ,in this case you need to take insuline therapy. This condition is called diabetic ketosis or ketoacidosis and in this case you need medical attention.

Hope this is helpful.
If you have other questions, feel free and ask.I will vbe happy to help.
Take care.
