What Does A Swollen Gland Above Tonsil Indicate?

Question: Would like to know:

1. What is the large/swollen (gland?) above my tonsil. I'm unsure of what this is.
2. Are my tonsils considered swollen?
3. Is a tonsilectomy recommended?

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through the image thoroughly after zooming it. The mass of tissue noticed by you is the upper pole of the tonsil with a deep crypt separating it from the rest of the tonsillar tissue.

Medial surface of the tonsil, facing the oral cavity is characterised by 15 - 20 irregularly spaced openings. These openings lead to deep, narrow and blind ended recess known as crypts. The largest of the crypts known as the crypta magna is present close to the superior pole of the tonsil and that is the one we notice on both the tonsils.

Do not worry! It is perfectly normal. This not a sign of malignancy.
