What Does A Hard Lump At Clavicle Joint Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: Hi. About 2 weeks ago I woke up with a hard lump at the Joint where the clavicle meets the sternum. It seems as if the joint itself is swollen. I'm pretty sure this literally popped up overnight. It's painless, and it seems to be pushing the entire clavicle forward a bit. The day before, I had done a pull-up exercise I don't normally do (close grip on handles that extend outward.) I pulled pretty hard to get three or four reps, and I'm wondering if this might have something to do with it. Another possibility: I have psoriasis, and I wonder if this could be a sign of psoriatic arthritis. What do you think?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
thanks for sending your question.

This is a very interesting question and I can understand how this might be causing you a great deal of discomfort and concern.

I have seen cases like this before when someone has strained or lifted or pushed or pulled something that they develop a significant amount of swelling in this particular area.

in each case the swelling slowly resolved with some anti-inflammatory medications and some warm compresses. For you I would suggest this type of approach with continued observation. If the area continues to be a problem in terms of pain or progressive swelling then you might want to bring it to the attention of your doctor for further considerations.

Other things that can sometimes be done include a CAT scan or MRI but I don't really think you need that type of thing right now.

thanks again for sending your question. I don't think this has anything to do with the psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis but it is an interesting thought.

Please let us know if you have any additional specific concerns.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
