default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2016
Question: Hello what do these results mean?

C Diff antigen : positive
C Diff QI PCR: Detected (C diff Toxin B Gene Detected)
Stool WBC : >20

I am currently on Flagyl 500 mg for 10 days (2 x a day) Will C diff come back after I stop because of the toxin?
Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
It confirms the suspicion your doctor had, and helps with treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. This particular test is used to detect toxin producing Clostridium difficile, and your test result has returned a positive result; which was probably why you may have been experiencing recurrent infections.

The antibiotics you are on, if categorised as sensitive should help to treat the infection and also to eliminate the infection-causing organism ma'am. But I would also like to highlight that it would be best to report to your doctor on the 9th day of your antibiotic course, so your doctor can monitor your progress and decide whether or not an extended course will be required, or the prescribed 10-day course should suffice.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you. I have not had a recurrent episode and am on my first cycle of flagyl. I am feeling better but worried the c diff will return once I am off based on what I have read online.

Brief Answer:
A longer course of antibiotics (more than 7 days) should suffice

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

For this reason, a longer course than usual of flagyl is prescribed, which should prevent future occurences sir. So don't worry, all should be fine sir. If you develop any symptoms or have any concerns, you know where to find me sir. :)

Best wishes.
