What Do Small Lumps In Breast Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 3 May 2014
Question: Hello, i am wanting some advice on breast lumps and pain. My right breast has some tender lumps at the bottom part of my breast and toward the outer side as well. I know atleast a few of those bumps have been there for several months, however i always assumed they were there temporarily due to certain times of the month. The bumps do not hurt unless i am pressing on them during a self exam, and the breast with the lumps aches now that i kept probing to see if i could feel anything in particular. Some feel oval in shape and some feel round. I would guess the range are between the sizes of a pea and a dime- and theres atleast 3-4 that i can make out. I am 24 years old, and due to get my period anyday. Maybe its hormones and the lumps just swell naturally each month? I am not sure. Theres no history of breast cancer in my family. I have had ovarian cysts in the past, and do have endometriosis. I had a miscarriage a year and a half ago at around 7-8 weeks pregnant- not sure if that matters. Also, the outside of my breast looks totally normal, no indents or redness, or visible protrusions. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

Brief Answer: Do not worry, cause is not cancerous. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome, I am very happy that you do a self breast exam and also found changes and are seeking medical advice. It is what we expect from our patients as these small precautions help in early diagnosis and treatment. Now for your problem: Please do not worry. The changes favor fibrocystic disease of the breast. This is a condition where small lumps appear in the breast, more during the premenstrual phase and decrease after periods. They may disappear completely or may decrease in size. This is a painful condition. The diagnosis is by examination, history and a mammogram. The treatment is mainly by use of pain killers when the pain is severe. Other medicines that may be used are vitamin E, oral contraceptives but benefits of both are not proven. Lifestyle modification healthy diet of fruits and vegetables and regular exercise also help in decreasing the intensity of the condition. Other reason may be fibroadenomas: they are non cancerous fluid filled tumors. They move easily under the breast tissue and may grow to sizes from pea size to orange size. They are diagnosed by fluid aspiration form the cyst and treatment is excision of the cyst. So as of now, I suggest that you visit your doctor and have an examination. A mammogram or ultrasound will be needed as per the examination findings and then the future treatment will be decided as per the reports. Please do not worry as these are very common conditions and can be treated easily. Hope this was helpful. Feel free to ask any further queries and I will be happy to help. Thanks for using HCM.
