What Causes White Patches Below The Eyes And On The Cheeks?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: Hello, My son, Aniruddha (10 yrs age) has gotten white patches below the eyes, and above cheeks. The patches are more visible after exposure to sunlight, and so we apply a sun screen lotion (SPF-25) everyday to avoid the situation. These patches are on the face and not any other part of the body. Pls advice as to what are the likely reasons for this problem and how do I treat the problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query.
Probably he has developed photo allergy known as polymorphic light eruption.
Its good that you are using sunscreen.
If possible upload a photograph of the involved area.
This will help me in giving a closer diagnosis and better way of management.
Waiting for your response.
Thank you.

Hello Doctor, Thank you for the quick response.

A small correction in my statement - we have seen similar patches on his hands as well. But the behavior of the problem aggravating is same as that of the patches on the face - exposure to sunlight.

I am attaching some photographs of the patches on face and hands.

Best Regards
xxx

Brief Answer:
Polymorphic light eruption

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the photograph.
It is polymorphic light eruption.
Lesions on face and hand occur in this.
I treat such cases with a mild steroid cream like fluticasone to be applied in night and sunscreen with spf of 50 in day.
Use steroid cream for 10 days and sunscreen to be used daily.
He is allergic to sunlight hence he is developing these lesions.
Give him carrot and other yellow fruits.
These contain carotene which provides protection from sunlight from inside.
These lesions might keep appearing for 3 to 4 years and then will disappear as the body gets adapted.
Let me know if you have any other doubts.
Thank you.
