What Causes Wheezing And Severe Coughing With Normal PO2 Levels?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: Went to dr today. 6 weeks of bronchitis, coughing so hard I get nose bleeds, so tired and any exertion leaves me gasping for air. My legs from the knees down are retaining water, they hurt. I am 45 years old 2x open heart patient. Aortic root enlargement and valve replacement at 30 and another replacement at 42. I'm also tittering off venlafaxine a week in and done. Bad time to do that after 4 weeks of coughing my lungs up. Inr is at 5.9 and has been for a month as I forgot to go back a month ago when it was 5.6. Large baseball size bruise on my left breast for a week and a half, which I bruise all the time so I just ignore this. I want to cut my head off, the pulsating headaches are wretched which I attribute to being off the venlafaxine. I. Feel like a wreck and my poor dr probably is too. When I went the finger oxygen said 98 percent and 91 for the other number. Good blood pressure at 95 over 69. She stated the wheezing in my chest and wrote a script for antibiotics and an inhaler. Said if I wasn't done coughing by Monday to go back to see her. How can I feel like this and have a oxy reading of 98 percent and be retaining all this
Fluid. Gaining 9 pounds in a month and have no appetite. I just don't get this... I should be fine if it is 98 percent. Can someone explain to me please.
And let's not forget I'm on 40 mg of gerd medication per day or my meds come back up like a volcano.
And last high cholesterol at 278 and on meds for that.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Thank you for your concerns about your health and your faith in healthcare magic.
Please read the suggestions below...

1. It is possible for a reading of PO2 to be perfectly normal and yet have a range of health conditions. This is because the Pulse Oximeter readings simply state the oxygen saturation levels in your blood stream.

2. I would politely ask you to stop Venlafaxine in consultation with a local doctor who can assess you across the desk. He or She would probably stop the SNRE medication and replace with an exact correct dose of SSRI, like say for instance Prozac. You are absolutely right when you say lousy headaches can be attributed to Venlafaxine.

Stop Venlafaxine. Take action now, a drug is only to be taken when it's benefits
outweigh the side effects it produces. This is not the case with Venlafaxine, in your case, at least.

3.You might want to gently elevate your feet whilst going off to sleep to relieve the edema (fluid collection). you might need a drug called as a diuretic, nevertheless I feel that the best way to get rid of the swelling is to add foods that increase urine output, subtly, without being bothersome.

4.Please try to incorporate lemons, cabbage, cranberry juice, oats and celery to your diet. These will cause you body to get rid of excessive fluids.

5. The above mentioned foods, oats in particular can cause you to slim effectively, efficiently and quickly.

6.Kindly do a BSE (Breast self examination), which is rather simple to learn, and please vocally voice your concerns to your local doctor. Take this rather seriously. An ounce of prevention is better than a tonne of cure.

7.Maybe your doctor may give you some Aceclofenac tablets for your aches. They come in combination with Tylenol. They really work wonders for aches and pains.

8. Your lack of appetite can be attributed to stress. Can you kindly take any measures to decrease your stress levels?

9. Thanks for mentioning your GERD and High cholesterol levels. You might need to manage them using a regular maintenance dose.

Take care of your health.

Thank you, you have helped be with suggestions I have not been told. Like the natural foods for water reduction. It is Monday and it seems the inhaler and the antibiotics aren't helping, not even a little. Still have major shortness of breath upon exercion, especially stairs...when this happens every joint in my body hurts. It reminds me of the fatigue I had before this heart surgery. My right shoulder is the worst and back side of my legs back off knees down. I still have the major Effexor headache, well what I think is from that. Can quiting Effexor cause all of this? Coughing attacks, producing little.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

It's a pleasure to hear from you again!

I appreciate the fact that you are very upfront about your health problems. XXXXXXX You are a well informed consumer, it's just that you're kind off stressed out.
Anyone would get "psyched up" with all these illnesses attacking them at the same time.

Dear XXXXXXX just chill. Relax. Take a deep breath.

Now let's face the music and "fix" you.

1. I strongly feel that you need to take a medication called "Bromhexine". This is available as a cough syrup and also as a tablet. "Bromhexine" will put a full stop to your coughing spells. This is because this medicine will dissolve the phlegm in your lungs and "clean them up". It must be really hard to have to bronchitis on a regular basis. Kindly see a local doctor, and he or she will help you out in this matter.

2. I strongly feel that a drug should be taken when it's curative effects justify it's
side effects. This is no longer the case with Venlafaxine, which is rather notorious for giving people "brain busting" headaches. Venlafaxine is an SNRE drug. Dear XXXXXXX why not try Prozac? or Zoloft? They are SSRI's and are as good if not better than Venlafaxine because they help you with a MUCH lower list of side effects.

3. Please login to www.youtube.com and type in these keywords "pranayama",
"yogic breathing". This has nothing to do with any religion. These are merely breathing techniques that you need to practice daily for 15 minutes. You will benefit because your lungs will be strengthened and you'll feel rather peaceful, which will help the Prozac pills do their "job" better.

4. Oh yes! I almost forgot! Be very vocal and inform your doctor about your aches and pains. I strongly feel that though pain killers like Nimesulide or Ibuprofen may temporarily help you. The medicine of choice is dosulepin. Kindly discuss this with your doctor.
