Well the settlement of these symptoms varry depending upon persons variations as well as type of chemotherapy as well dose of chemotherapy and radiations. As different types of chemotherapy are used in different type of cancers.
To make it more clear there are certain type of chemotherapy which break rapidly dividing cells and thus affect normal human tissue like GI tract, skin and hair as well as they also have rapidly dividing tendencies. such chemo types induce GI symptoms like nausea , vomiting and diarrhea for a longer time upto few weeks until the lost mucosa replicates back.
Some chemo agents are cytotoxic and kill cells and thus may trigger bodies responses like an emergency situation or may release chemical mediators which may induce vomitings. Some may trigger receptors of neurotransmitters which may trigger vomitings. Similar is the case with radiotherapy but is dose dependant as well as on the site of radiation. With higher doses symptoms may last for few days. In a nut shell with chemotherapy vomitings tend to stay longer upto days to few weeks while with radiotherapy mostly it's a short term response and settles within couple of days.
Certain drugs like odensterone have shown promising results with post chemo and radio symptoms. Other motility agents like domperidone or anti emetics like dimenhydrinate may help as well.
