What Causes Vomiting After A IVIG Treatment?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: My mother had IVIG treatment for 5 days in the hospital because she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome. She has been transferred to acute rehab. On the second day after her treatment was stopped she started to vomit a lot. Could it be connected to IVIG?

Brief Answer:
Take steps as discussed

Detailed Answer:
Hello Tanayakut,Welcome to HCM.

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

It's a bit unclear about your question.

Your mother had been given IVIG for 5 days completely or not.

If she started vomiting on the Second day of IVIG due to some reactions then it again can be started in slow rate with proper supervision and pre-medications.

The IVIG is to be given as early as possible preferably before 2 weeks of disease motor symptoms.

If she has completed 5 days IVIG therapy and is vomiting afterwards then no need of repeat therapy.

For vomiting other medications are available and can be given after consultation with your treating neurologist.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if there's any further queries you're having.

Brief Answer:
Take treatment as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxxxxxxxx
The adverse effects related to Ivig are during administration of drug and not afterwards.
The cause of vomiting may be something else like gastritis, stress ulcer.
Another possibility may be delayed gastric emptying due to disease. Is she passing stools if not then give her enema or stool laxative.
For vomiting anti-emetic like odensetron, domperidone with proton pump inhibitors like pantoprazole, omeprazole or rabeprazole.
