Question: I am facing lot of muscle related problems lately. First of all I seem to have developed early spondylitis. My upper back and neck pains very often after my days work.(which involve sitting through 9-10 hours ) Also due to driving car my left calf muscle and knee joint (cartilage around the join) seems to pain /stressed. If i drive bike my left shoulder pains a bit. It seems which ever muscle I use excessively is demonstrating streaa symptoms. Is it indicative of any broader health problem.

Brief Answer: All due to muscle spasms. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. You are suffering from what we call the industrial back ache. The upper back and neck pains that you have are not due to spondylosis. Rest assured all this is a muscle related pain which is completely reversible with appropriate exercise and rest. There is no major health problem with you. The first step is to ensure that you maintain an appropriate posture while working or driving. Take frequent stretch breaks and drink lots of water. Discontinue using pillow while sleeping straight. Do not lift heavy objects, especially after bending down. Eat a healthy wholesome meal which should satisfy your minerals and proteins requirement. Get your Vitamin D3 levels evaluated. In case there is deficiency do start with proper supplements. The most essential and long lasting remedy is exercises. There are certain back strengthening and neck isometric exercises and knee strengthening exercises that you must learn from a physiotherapist and perform them at home or work whenever possible. You can also undergo a weeks session of traction at your physiotherapist's clinic. Do indulge in regular exercises like jogging aerobics or swimming. Last but not least, if its unbearable take medications or muscle relaxant prescribed by your physician. And if it has been long standing illness visit your orthopaedician and clinically-radiologically establish a diagnosis to commence definitive treatment. I hope this answers your query. In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out. Wishing you good health. Regards. Dr. Praveen Tayal.
