default
Posted on Sat, 4 Apr 2015
Question: I'm 72 years old and relatively good condition -- 5' 11'' weigh 183. Still working 8 to 6 five days a week. Recently having problems of upper abdominal pain , feeling full or bloated and a feeling that I want to belch -- never have been much of a belcher all my life. Will eat a salad and cup of soup for dinner at 6:00 , take a Tums around 8:00 , go to bed at 10:00 and around 2 or 3 in the morning will wake up with the upper abdominal pain . Feeling like I need to belch or throw up .
Any idea what could cause this ??

Brief Answer:
Symptoms indicating acid reflux, upper endoscopy to be scheduled...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Your symptoms are highly indicative for possible acid reflux. I advise to:
- schedule upper endoscopy with GI specialist
- avoid foods that would trigger the pain such as: oily/spicy foods; chocolate; cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc.
- avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
- start taking PPIs like omeprazole or pantoprazole
- take OTC Ranitidine at bedtime
- continue taking Tums
- raise your head when sleeping with extra pillow

Hope it was of help!
