default
Posted on Sat, 28 Feb 2015
Question: My left arm has been tingling and having numbness for about 8 hours today. This is not the first time I have experienced this and have been seen by doctors to rule out serious problems. However in the last few months i find if I use meth for more than a 1 day period this happens. Just wondering what caused this and if it can be avoided.

Brief Answer:
Go for Vitamin B12 level andEMG-NCV study

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Numbness and tingling in particular part of body for 8 hours suggest some local nerve problem.Meth can cause such problem but frequent episodes and lasting for hours suggests that there may be some problem related to nerves.

Different Reasons can be:

-Some past injury to nerves supplying left arm this might happened when you have slept after taking meth with pressure on arm pit and radial nerve compressed for long.

-Vitamin B12(cobylamine) deficiency may present with such symptoms.Need to check serum Vitamin B12 level. If it is less, injection supplement should be given.

-Other neuropathy in nerves supplying left arm.For evaluation of nerve problem EMG-NCV(electromyography and nerve conduction velocity) should be done.In this case also vitamin B12 supplement or pregabalin is useful

Meth itself can cause some nerve dysfunction temporarily. It is possible that when you take meth more in amount, your underlying problem worsens and you feel severe symptoms.

Please upload/write your investigations reports done until now. Stop taking Meth and see that your problem is resolved or not.

Discuss above aspects with your doctor also.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Thank you, I never have the problem any other time, and i do not use big amounts of the drug. I just occasionally use once in a while, Just wondered if this was a b12 deficiency why it only presents itself when i have taken this drug.

Brief Answer:
Go for Serum B12 level, stop taking meth

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have told different possibilities. Vit B12 deficiency may be the cause. You need to check by checking serum Vitamin B12 level.

Meth intake can cause trembling or shaking of the hands or feet as side effects. This may be the only reason of your problem. For confirmation we need to rule out all other possibilities.
However if underlying vitamin B12 deficiency or some other pathology is there in nerves, meth is just precipitating/exaggerating the problem by its own effect.

If you stop taking meth for long and no problem occurs, it also confirms that problem is due to meth only.

Hope this answers your query, I will be glad to answer again if needed.
