What Causes Throat Pain While Deep Breathing, Sinus Drainage And Productive Cough?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: My throat hurts when I breathe in deeply. I also have sinus drainage and cough up mucus, mostly when i exercise or wake up in the AM.the caught used to be worse before I started an inhaler. I have a history of smoking 20 years ago for about 12 years, and few years ago I smoked for a year maybe 2 cigarettes a day if that. I also went for a Lung X-ray a few months ago and it showed a small white area behind my sternum that "suggested" COPD but my lungs and diaphragm looked great otherwise. my Dr thinks my throat hurting when I breathe in is due to allergies. Could it be something worse, like throat cancer? or do you think its allergies?

Brief Answer:
Asthma seems most probable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptom is rather caused by asthma or COPD. Generally this two conditions are very similar and sometimes it is hard to determine which is the case. Especially that you have been smoking for a 12 years and have an allergy. The treatment of this two diseases is the same.

X-ray is not a good test to diagnose this two conditions. You should rather consult pulmunologist and have blow test done (spirometry).

If its about throat cancer, please forget about it. Not after 20 years break from cigarettes and some minor smoking few years ago. All your smoking is a history right now.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

I do a breathing test through a tube at every yearly exam and it's always good. I just had one about 4 months ago.

Brief Answer:
Asthma can come and go.

Detailed Answer:
If its an asthma and you havent had symptoms that time (4 months ago) the test could be completely normal. Asthma can come and go as the allergy factors appear and disappear. Still pulmunologist should be consulted.
